A Bit of History
The first international event related to tourism in Cuba took place in Havana from 17 to 24 October 1959 and was the ninth Convention of Tourism Agents (ASTA). More than two thousand agents from 82 countries, accompanied by their relatives, visited the Cuban capital.
It was not until 1980 that Cubatur convened the First Cubatur Travel Convention, based in the emblematic Habana Libre hotel in the Cuban capital. The event aroused international interest, provoking the participation of more than 300 delegates and representatives of more than 200 travel agencies worldwide. Subsequently the meeting began to reach greater relevance and international acceptance. From its emergence it was held every year and alternated venues between Havana and the spa of Varadero.
Finally, these annual meetings were named the International Tourism Fair of Cuba (FITCuba) and have helped to ensure a true flourishing of collaboration and friendship between different nations.
From 2005 to 2011, the Morro-Cabaña Historic Park was the official headquarters of FITCuba. This complex, integrated by the Castle of the Three Wise Men of the Morro and the Fortress San Carlos of La Cabaña, is part of the system of fortifications of Havana, and was declared by UNESCO, in 1982, Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The fair was held in 2012 in Cayo Santa María, in the province of Villa Clara; in 2013 in Varadero; in 2014 in Havana, in 2015 in Cayo Coco and Cayo Guillermo in Jardines del Rey. He returned to Havana in 2016, when it was declared Ciudad Maravilla. In its 37th edition, in 2017, FITCuba took place in Holguín, having as headquarters the hotel Pesquero in Guardalavaca; and in 2018, for being a region generously benefited by nature and the beauty of its beaches, the keys of the north of Villa Clara are retaken as headquarters.
Last year, FITCuba 2023 was held at Morro-Cabaña Park in Havana, and focused on Cuban culture and heritage.
